Hi Everybody! I'm curious as to whether there are any other fans of jazz pianist Dave Brubeck here. He has been one of my favorite musicians for the past year or so, and I should be hearing him., as well as other highly talented musicians, play live this August at the Newport Jazz Festival in Newport, Rhode Island. As many of my friends are painfully aware, I am beyond excited for this event, and can't believe I'll be hearing Take Five live, or at least I'm assuming he'll be playing it. (As much as I love that song, I do wonder if he's grown tired of it after so many years.) Whereas this will be my first time seeing him in concert, my boyfriend, who will be going with me, has already seen him play on two previous occasions. It turns out that he and a friend ended up briefly meeting his bass player prior to the concert, without realizing that this was the case until seeing him onstage!
Anyway, for those of you who are also fans, what are your favorite songs, albums, etc? Has anyone else here seen Brubeck play live? I like most all of his albums that i've heard so far (which are not all of them), especially Time Out. I very much enjoy his use of irregular time signatures!
And of course feel free to mention anything Brubeck-related which may be unrelated to what I have said so far.
Hellz yeah. The person who actually wrote Take Five, his most famous song, is the sax player Paul Dezmond (who plays a lot with Brubeck and was obviously on Time Out). Rondo a la Turka is awesome. As is Unsquare Dance.
Hey!!! Yeah, I'm a new fan, actually!!!! "Take Five" is I think one of the only songs I heard by him. Hmmm, looks like I'll have to download one of his albums when I get a chance. But yes, he's awesome!!! :)
Amber.
Al Jareaux (Hope I spelled it right did a version of Take Five with lyrics which is quite good, as is his cover of Blue Rondo. I first heard Dave when I was a child. I understand he is really hard on pianos.

sure am! bored with take 5 though. He's good, not my favourite though. Have a listen to art tatum, osca peterson, etc if youoh and charly parker obviously. *smiles*
I think that Art Tatum had a third hand up his sleeve somewhere. *smile*

You bet, Brubec is one of my favorites. I, too, love the way he plays with time signatures.

I suppose I am, but all I've really heard is the "Time Out" album. I expect one of these days I'll check out more albums, though.
I think they did an album during the sixties of theme music from movies, that I thought sucked. Other than that, I really like anything I've heard from him.
